GALLIANO PADRE - Portofino & Liguria

The Galliano Padre is a solid choice for a wreck dive in the Portofino area, especially if you’re keen on something a bit different from the usual walls. We love that it was scuttled specifically as an artificial reef, and you can really see the benefit of that intention. It’s sitting upright in about 25 metres, and because it’s not too deep, you get decent bottom time to properly explore its structure. The visibility here is often very good, letting you appreciate the sheer scale of the old fishing vessel. As you descend, the dark shape slowly resolves into a surprisingly intact hull, with the wheelhouse and stern still well-defined. Schools of damselfish and often some barracuda patrol the upper deck, weaving in and out of what remains of the rigging. Look into the cargo hold; it’s now home to conger eels and some impressively large dusky groupers. We've even spotted octopus tucked away in crevices on the hull. It’s a site that proves how quickly marine life reclaims a space, making it perfect for photographers who appreciate the contrast of steel and soft corals. Go early to avoid dive boat traffic, and spend some time slowly circling the wreck. You’ll be rewarded.
