GEIERFELS - Portofino & Liguria

The Geierfels wreck is one of those Mediterranean dives we keep coming back to. Forget what you think you know about Italian wrecks, this isn’t just a pile of rust. Sunk in 1940, this 153-meter steamship sits deep, starting around 50 meters, meaning it’s one for the experienced tech divers among us. We love the sheer scale of it, and the way the light filters down, illuminating different sections of the massive hull. Dropping down, the bow looms out of the blue first, usually encrusted with red gorgonians. Our favorite part is exploring the superstructure, where schools of barracuda often circle, their silver scales flashing in our torch beams. Look closely and you’ll find moray eels peeking from every nook. The visibility here can be truly astounding on a good day, making the descent feel like flying over a ghostly city. It’s a challenging dive, sure, but the rewards are immense for those seeking a true exploration.
