Genepesca Wreck - Portofino & Liguria

The Genepesca Wreck off Portofino is one of those sites that just feels right, a real standout in the Mediterranean. We love a wreck with a story, and this fishing boat, sunk in the 1960s, has settled upright on the seabed, making for an incredibly evocative dive. Dropping down, you start to make out the shape of the bow, then the bridge structure, covered in the rich reds and oranges of gorgonian fans. Inside, the hold is open, and if you've got the wreck cert, it's a tight but rewarding swim through, with light shafts cutting through the gloom. Look out for conger eels peering from every dark nook. Even if you stick to the exterior, there’s plenty to see – big schools of damselfish hover over the deck, and we've spotted inquisitive John Dory gliding past the stern. For us, the Genepesca is perfect for divers who appreciate history and the slow reclamation of man-made structures by nature. Go early on a weekday to avoid the dive boat traffic.
