GIONATA - Portofino & Liguria

We love a good wreck, and the *Gionata* delivers, especially for those looking for something a bit deeper in the Ligurian Sea. This 33-meter fishing trawler went down in 1978 near Tino Island, a sad night that claimed four lives. Now, it rests upright at 60 meters, a shadowed hulk that still feels very much like a working boat. Dropping down, the visibility here can be tricky, sometimes just 10 meters, but the *Gionata* emerges slowly from the blue, its lines surprisingly intact. The wheelhouse is still there, and we often find ourselves just hovering, imagining the crew on deck before that storm hit. Moray eels peek out from every crevice, and big lobsters clamber over the deck plating. The nets are long gone, but the ghost of a fishing vessel remains, now a home for schooling damselfish. It’s a dive for experienced wreck enthusiasts, best done on calm days, and it always leaves us with a quiet sense of history.
