MONTONE - Portofino & Liguria

Montone isn't your typical Italian wreck. It's a proper shallow-water playground, especially if you're into history and easy diving. This old steamship, built in 1954, ran aground in 1977 and now sits in just five metres of water, making it perfect for snorkelers, freedivers, or anyone who wants a long, relaxed dive without worrying about deco. What we love about Montone is how accessible the wreck is. You can spend ages poking around the superstructure, identifying bits of machinery, and imagining its working life. The bow, in particular, is a fantastic spot. Even in such shallow water, the wreck provides plenty of shelter and structure. You'll often find shoals of damselfish shimmering around the remaining bulkheads, and inquisitive gobies peeking out from every crevice. We’ve had some cracking dives here, just following the natural light as it plays through the remaining openings. The visibility can be quite good on a calm day, and the lack of depth means your bottom time is virtually unlimited. It's an ideal spot for practicing wreck penetration skills in a safe environment, or just enjoying a really long underwater wander.
