Relitto del Croesus - Portofino & Liguria

The Relitto del Croesus is a properly atmospheric dive, one we always enjoy when we’re in Portofino. It’s the remains of a cargo ship, sunk over a century ago, and time has turned it into a fantastic artificial reef. We love descending onto the main deck, often finding a big conger eel peering out from a dark corner, or a cloud of damselfish flitting through the superstructure. The wreck itself is reasonably intact, with holds you can peer into, if not penetrate deeply, and a scattered debris field around the main body that’s worth exploring for nudibranchs. It’s a site that really suits divers who appreciate a bit of history with their marine life, and it’s accessible enough for those comfortable with a steady descent and good buoyancy. Our favourite way to dive it is slowly, taking the time to search for the smaller stuff – a scorpionfish tucked against a hull plate, or a vibrant jewel anemone clinging to rusted metal. The visibility can vary, but even on an average day, the sheer density of life on the Croesus makes it a standout dive.
