UMBERTO I (POSSIBLY) - Portofino & Liguria

There’s something about a deep wreck, isn't there? The Umberto I, or what we believe to be her, sits down at 30 metres, a grand steamship from 1917, torpedoed by a submarine in the Mediterranean. It’s a proper historical dive, not just some scattered debris. As you descend, the sheer scale of her, 109 metres long, slowly materialises from the blue. We love exploring the bow, feeling the cold steel under our gloved hands, picturing the crew on deck over a century ago. Keep an eye out for the resident moray eels peeking from crevices; they seem to have claimed the Umberto I as their own. The plating is draped in colourful gorgonians, and schools of damselfish flit in and out of the deeper holds. It's a dive that rewards slow exploration, perfect for advanced divers who appreciate a wreck with a story. Pick a calm day; the surface can get choppy, making the descent a bit less graceful.
