Wreck `Mohawk Deer` - Portofino & Liguria
The Mohawk Deer is a fantastic wreck, but it’s not for the faint of heart or those new to Italian diving. We consider it an advanced Mediterranean dive, really. Perched on a steep slope between 20 and 40 meters, the stern section is the shallowest, but the bow disappears into the deep, making good buoyancy control essential. The real magic here is the sense of history; you can still make out the ship’s structure, with rooms and corridors open for careful exploration. We’ve seen some incredible residents on the Mohawk Deer. Big schools of salema shimmer around the decks, and the occasional garrupa or large conger eel peeks out from a shadowed corner. Look closely, and you’ll find vibrant sunset cup corals and scarlet corals dusting the metalwork, a colourful contrast to the grey steel. Our favourite tip? Try to hit this site mid-morning. The light filtering through the Mediterranean water really brings out the reds and oranges of the corals, making the penetration sections particularly atmospheric. Just be mindful of potential thermoclines and always go with a guide who knows the site well.
