Wreck of Pomonte - Portofino & Liguria

The Wreck of Pomonte, nestled off Portofino's rugged coast, isn’t just some rusty old boat. This cargo ship, deliberately scuttled in the 1970s to create an artificial reef, now lies upright, split into two main sections. We love that it’s relatively shallow, making it a brilliant extended dive, even for those newer to wreck diving. As you descend, the sheer size begins to reveal itself, beams of sunlight piercing through the superstructure. Inside the holds, we've spotted schools of glinting silversides so dense they shimmer like liquid mercury. Moray eels peek from every crevice, and the vibrant colours of gorgonian fans contrast against the dark metal. Our favourite part is navigating the engine room, a tight squeeze in places, but worth it for the sense of exploration. The wreck sits at around 20-25 metres, and while currents are generally mild, keep an eye on the forecast, as exposed sites can get choppy. It’s a photographer's dream, especially when the light is just right in the late morning.
