FISHPOOL - Ustica
Fishpool isn't your average Mediterranean wreck. This isn't some ancient Roman pottery scatter, but a proper WWII cargo ship, and it’s a site we consistently recommend. She went down in 1943, loaded with aviation spirit and munitions, so you can imagine the explosion. What’s left, lying at a comfortable 13 metres, is a sprawling, almost abstract landscape of twisted metal and collapsed holds. We love how accessible this wreck is. You don't need deep diving certs, which means more bottom time to really absorb the scale of it all. As you fin over the main hull, you’ll spot sections of plating peeling back like giant metallic petals, creating swim-throughs that are just wide enough for one diver. Keep an eye out for the resident moray eels peeking from every crevice. We’ve also seen huge schools of Mediterranean barracuda circling the superstructure here, their silver scales flashing in the dappled light filtering through the surface. It’s a genuinely evocative dive, a chance to touch a piece of history and see how marine life reclaims even the most violent of human interventions. For photographers, the ambient light and the dramatic structure make for some striking shots.
