JUAN DE JUANES - Al Hoceima

The Juan de Juanes wreck isn’t deep, topping out at a mere 8 metres, but it offers a unique peek into maritime history and the surprising resilience of Mediterranean life. This isn't one of those fully intact hulks where you can almost imagine the crew on deck. We're talking about a fragmented vessel, scattered across a sandy seabed, almost like a giant, rusty jigsaw puzzle. It feels like uncovering history piece by piece. What we love most about it is the way the sea has reclaimed it. Every twisted piece of metal, every broken timber, has become a home. You’ll spot groups of damselfish darting between the struts, the occasional octopus tucked into a crevice, and delicate nudibranchs crawling along the corroded surfaces. It’s a great site for photographers, especially with good natural light penetration. The visibility here can be superb on a calm day, giving the wreck an ethereal quality. Our advice? Go slow. Take your time sifting through the debris field. There’s always another small creature hiding, another detail to notice in the shifting sands around the wreck. It suits divers who appreciate history, macro life, and don't mind a leisurely exploration of a dispersed site.
