MAJORBELL - Al Hoceima

MAJORBELL is an odd one, a peculiar little wreck we still talk about. This isn't your deep, dramatic freighter. Sunk back in '86 after hitting rocks, the *Majorbell* sits in barely a metre of water, a jumble of hull and superstructure breaking the surface. It’s less a dive and more a snorkel, but don't dismiss it. We love it for its sheer accessibility and the way it’s become an accidental reef. Duck your head under and the light plays through the gaps in the metal, illuminating clouds of juvenile damselfish and the occasional inquisitive octopus tucked into crevices. It’s surprisingly busy in there. Moray eels are often found poking their heads from pipes, their eyes following you. If you go on a calm morning, the visibility is fantastic, often 10 metres or more, and the sound of the small waves lapping against the metal above you is surprisingly immersive. This is a perfect spot for photographers looking for interesting light and macro subjects, or for newer snorkelers to experience a wreck without any of the usual depth concerns. Our favourite time to go is late afternoon, as the sun dips; the colours on the wreck's encrusting sponges really pop.
