ECHENHEIM - Stavanger & Rogaland

There’s something about a Norwegian wreck, isn't there? The Echenheim, a steamship that met its end in 1944, sits upright and largely intact, calling to divers with a taste for history and atmosphere. Descending onto the main deck at around 30 metres, you immediately feel the scale of her. We love how the strong hull lines are still so evident, a testament to her robust build despite the years on the seabed. Penetration is possible into some of the cargo holds, though we’d advise proper training and a guide who knows the ship inside out; it’s dark in there, and surprisingly silty. Our favourite detail has to be the deck machinery, still largely in place – winches, derricks, and other bits of ironwork now encrusted with sponges and anemones. Look closely, and you’ll spot plumose anemones waving like miniature flags from every available surface, and the occasional ling or cod peering out from a dark corner. This isn't a site for beginners; the depth, often murky visibility, and cold water demand experience, but for those prepared, the Echenheim offers a truly evocative dive.
