Eckenheim Shipwreck - Stavanger & Rogaland

The Eckenheim wreck is something special, even for Norway, which says a lot. It's not about the depth here, but the mood. Dropping onto the deck of this German cargo ship, torpedoed in 1944, feels like stepping back in time. You can easily spend an hour just exploring the stern, poking around the intact superstructure, or peering into the hold where we’ve often found schools of cod hanging out, unbothered by our presence. What we love most is how the metal framework has become a home. Anemones, dead man's fingers, and colourful sponges coat almost every surface, transforming the stark steel into a living reef. Visibility can be a bit variable, as it often is in this part of the world, but when it's good, the light filtering through the water and illuminating the wreck's ghostly form is genuinely captivating. This is a dive for those who appreciate history and the slow reclamation of man-made objects by nature. We’d suggest a good torch, not just for peering into nooks, but to really bring out the colours on the wreck.
