HMS Gurkha - Stavanger & Rogaland

The HMS Gurkha is a powerful piece of history, resting just outside Stavanger. We love this wreck not just for its story, but for how it’s become a home. Drop down and you’re instantly met with the sheer scale of her, a Tribal-class destroyer from 1937, now draped in sponges and anemones. There’s a real sense of quiet majesty down here. You can trace the lines of her deck, pick out where the guns once sat, and imagine the crew on watch. Visibility can play its games, as it often does in Norway, but when it’s good, you’ll find cod and ling patrolling the deeper sections. Our favourite is exploring the torpedo tubes, which are often swarming with schools of small fish, darting in and out of the metalwork. This isn't a dive for the faint of heart, currents can be brisk, so pick your day carefully and always go with a local guide who knows the site. It’s a compelling dive for those who appreciate wrecks with a genuine past and a living present.
