HMSM STERLET - Stavanger & Rogaland

Diving the HMSM Sterlet is a proper journey back in time, and for anyone into military history, this is our top pick in the Rogaland area. She sits at a manageable 23 metres, perfectly upright, making for a straightforward exploration. We love the eerie calm down there, imagining the circumstances of her sinking in 1940. You can really get a sense of her shape, the conning tower still distinct, and the bow section surprisingly intact, though the stern took the brunt of the attack. The Sterlet is a big submarine, 61.9 metres long, so there's plenty to cover. What we really appreciate is how the local fish have made her home. We've seen some surprisingly large cod tucked into the nooks and crannies, and wolfish are often spotted lurking in the shadows – keep an eye on the broken sections. Visibility can vary, but on a good day, the light plays beautifully off the metal, giving it a silver sheen. We'd suggest going at slack tide; the currents here can pick up, making it a bit less enjoyable to really take your time examining the details. She’s a sombre site, but a rewarding one for wreck enthusiasts looking for a tangible piece of wartime history.
