JEANETTE RUNE - Stavanger & Rogaland

Jeanette Rune, just outside Stavanger, is one of those wrecks we keep coming back to. At a shallow 17 metres, it’s a perfect multi-dive candidate, even for those newer to wreck diving. She’s a 28-metre trawler, sunk deliberately in 1984 as an artificial reef, and she landed upright, mostly intact. That’s key. You can swim through the wheelhouse, check out the engine room – all the good stuff is accessible, but it’s still very much a wreck, not just a pile of rubble. Our favourite time to visit is late summer when the light penetrates the superstructure, creating these cool shafts of green. We’ve seen conger eels poking their heads out from inside, and the deck is usually covered in nudibranchs and squat lobsters. The visibility can be 10-15 metres on a good day, but even when it drops, the wreck is compact enough to explore without feeling lost. We’d suggest a strong torch; there are plenty of nooks to illuminate. This site offers a real sense of exploration without the depth anxiety of deeper wrecks. It’s a cracker for anyone wanting to get hands-on with a proper wreck.
