Mekjervågen - Stavanger & Rogaland

Mekjervågen might not be on every diver's radar, but for a real taste of Norwegian cold-water diving, we absolutely love it. The site itself is quite sheltered, tucked into the coastline, which means conditions are often calmer here than at more exposed spots, a huge plus when the weather turns. What truly sets Mekjervågen apart for us is the chance to spot some of the shyer, more unusual residents. We’ve had incredible luck here finding velvet belly lantern sharks in the deeper sections, an absolute thrill. And for those keen on marine birds, keep an eye out for ruddy turnstones along the shore before you even get in. Entry is relatively easy from the shore, making it accessible for most experience levels. The real magic happens as you descend; the light takes on that beautiful, ethereal green hue unique to northern waters. We always recommend taking it slow, scanning the silty bottom for pearl-side and whiting. This isn't a site for dramatic drop-offs or colourful corals, but rather for patient divers who appreciate the subtle beauty of a robust, northern ecosystem. For a relaxed dive with a genuine chance of seeing something unexpected, Mekjervågen is a firm favourite of ours.
