MONTCALM - Stavanger & Rogaland
The Montcalm is a proper Norwegian wreck, a trawler sitting upright at 21 metres, and our top pick when diving near Stavanger. It went down in ’91 after a collision, so it's had plenty of time to settle and become a habitat. We love the feeling of swimming along the deck, imagining it in its working days. You can explore the wheelhouse, which is still intact, and the stern, where the trawling gear lies draped and twisted. The fish life here is surprisingly good, cod often hover in the shadow of the bridge, and large schools of pollock stream past. Look into the smaller nooks and crannies for wrasse and crab. The visibility can vary, but on a good day, the natural light filtering down through the superstructure is quite something. It’s a comfortable dive for anyone with a bit of wreck experience, no strong currents to worry about, just a fascinating piece of history to explore. We’d suggest a calm day for the best experience, as surface chop can make the entry a bit less pleasant.
