TILSIT - Stavanger & Rogaland

Tilsit is a different kind of wreck dive, a real slice of history right on the doorstep of Stavanger. You’re not dropping onto some intact behemoth, but rather the scattered remains of a steamship that met its end during wartime. What we love about Tilsit is the way the wreck has settled into the seabed, creating these unexpected little nooks and crannies. Visibility can be a bit variable here, but on a good day, the green light filtering through the water gives everything an eerie, quiet feel. Look closely amongst the twisted metal plates and collapsed superstructure for the resident cod, often quite large and unbothered by divers. We’ve also spotted some impressive wolfish tucked into crevices, their flat faces peering out. It’s a shallow dive, maxing out at 15 metres, which means plenty of bottom time to really absorb the atmosphere. Our pick for timing would be a slack tide, if you can catch it, to really take your time exploring the debris field. This one is less about penetration and more about appreciating the historical context and the way nature reclaims these sites. Definitely one for the wreck lovers who appreciate a bit of character over sheer size.
