IMPULSE - Azores

Impulse. A name that always sparks a bit of debate among our crew. Some call it an honour to dive a piece of history, others bemoan its lack of intact structure. And they’re both right, to a point. This isn’t a pristine, upright wreck to penetrate; it's a scattering of metal ribs, plates, and ghosted outlines of what once was. Think of it more as an archaeological playground, a place where the history seeps into the sand and the marine life has really taken hold. We love that this site encourages you to slow down, to really look. Instead of swimming through corridors, you’re tracing the remnants of bulkheads, imagining the vessel whole. Clouds of damselfish hover over the skeletal frames, and we’ve spent many a decompression stop just watching moray eels poke their heads from within collapsed sections. It’s a photographer’s delight if you appreciate the abstract, the way light filters through the gaps and creates stark shadows on the seabed. Definitely one for those who prefer history and macro life over grand, intact structures. We'd suggest going with a guide who knows the site well; they’ll point out features you might otherwise swim right over.
