Luso Wreck - Azores

The Luso Wreck, just off São Miguel, is one of those dives that sticks with you, especially if you love a good story. It’s an old steamship, sunk in 1918 after a collision, and now it sits upright and relatively intact at a comfortable 16 metres. We love that it’s so accessible; new divers can easily fin around the deck and peer into the holds without feeling overwhelmed. Exploring the Luso, you get a real sense of history. You can still make out the bow, the stern, and parts of the superstructure, all encrusted with colourful sponges and soft corals. It’s not just the wreck itself, though. Schools of silvery horse mackerel often swirl around the mast, and we’ve spent ages watching moray eels peek out from shadowy crevices. Our favourite part has to be the resident schools of juvenile barracuda that often hang motionless above the deck. For a straightforward, engaging wreck dive with a decent narrative, the Luso is a solid choice. Just keep an eye on the local dive shop forecasts; calm mornings offer the best visibility.
