VERONA - Tabarka

The Verona wreck, off Tabarka, offers a deep, intriguing dive. It’s for those who appreciate history settling into the seabed. This motor vessel went down in 1981, abandoned after running aground in heavy weather, all crew safely off. Now, she rests upright at 50 metres, a substantial piece of metal. We love how intact the Verona remains. You can still make out the superstructure, the bow, the stern, all largely whole. Swim through her various compartments, peering into what were once cabins or cargo holds. It’s a quiet exploration, the only sound your own breathing and the distant creak of metal settling. The decks are home to groups of damselfish, darting in and out of the rusted plating. Look closely, and you’ll spot scorpionfish camouflaged against the dark hull, waiting. Because of the depth, it’s a dive for experienced deep divers, perhaps even technical divers, who can manage their bottom time responsibly. Our favourite moments here are drifting over the bridge, imagining the storm that put her down, now just a peaceful home for the ocean’s creatures.
