KARANAN - Northumberland & Northeast

The Karanan is one of those wrecks that really sticks with you. Dropping down to 39 metres, you’re hitting the sweet spot for that deep, atmospheric vibe, and this site delivers. She's not a massive wreck, at just over 45 metres long, but what she lacks in sheer size, she makes up for in character. Built in the Netherlands in 1939, this carrier met her end in 1942, and time has given her a beautifully rugged texture. We love the way the wreck has settled, almost inviting you in. You’ll find the bridge area and engine room particularly engaging. Penetration here is possible for experienced divers, but take your time, there are some tight spots. Visibility can be a bit of a lottery in the North Sea, but when it’s good, the light filtering down the deck gives the whole place a ghostly glow. Look closely and you’ll spot plumose anemones clinging to every surface, their feathery tentacles swaying in the gentle surge. We’ve seen some seriously chunky conger eels here too, tucked away in crevices, their heads poking out like grumpy guardians. This is a dive for those who appreciate history, the quiet beauty of a wreck reclaimed by the sea, and aren't afraid of a bit of depth. Our favourite time to dive it is early in the season, before the worst of the summer silty build-up.
