LOWESWATER - Northumberland & Northeast

We always enjoy a good deep wreck, and Loweswater, sitting at 48m, certainly delivers. This isn't a site for the inexperienced, but if you're comfortable with depth and sometimes challenging UK conditions, it's a beauty. The barque went down in 1894, a victim of a violent storm, and time has given it a wonderful, moody atmosphere. Dropping down onto the wreck, you'll find the wooden hull surprisingly intact in places, a testament to the cold North Sea. The bow section is particularly captivating, often shrouded in a green twilight, with remnants of the rigging draped like ghostly cobwebs. We love to explore the holds, which are now home to a healthy population of feisty edible crabs and plenty of lobsters tucked into every crevice. Visibility can be a mixed bag, but on a good day, the sight of light shafts piercing the gloom into the holds is genuinely special. Look out for the resident ling, too, often lurking patiently in the deeper shadows. We’d suggest diving this on a slack tide for the best chance to really take it all in.
