MTB 539 - Northumberland & Northeast

The MTB 539, out in Northumberland, isn’t a shallow splash. At 43 metres, this requires some serious planning, but we think it’s absolutely worth the effort for experienced wreck divers. She’s a Vosper-built torpedo boat, a sleek 22-metre hull that’s now an artificial reef, sitting upright and remarkably intact considering her age. Dropping down, the first thing you notice is the sheer volume of life; it’s covered in plumose anemones, their white tentacles swaying in the often-present surge. Look closely and you’ll spot velvet crabs tucked into every crevice, and the resident wrasse aren't shy. We love finning along her deck, imagining the twin 20mm AA guns and torpedo tubes that once sat here. Penetration isn't really an option, but you can get a good look into the open deck sections. The bow is particularly striking, often shrouded in schooling coalfish that part as you approach. Be prepared for strong currents and bring a good torch; the light can be a bit gloomy down here, even on a sunny day. Our favourite time to dive her is on a neap tide, right on slack water, to maximise bottom time. This isn’t a dive for the faint of heart, but for those with the training and the gear, the MTB 539 offers a proper slice of history colonised by the North Sea.
