Hogs Back Reef - Québec

Green Island Reef, for us, is a classic Great Barrier Reef experience. It’s not the furthest flung, nor the most dramatic wall dive, but it consistently delivers. We love the feeling of gliding over those massive brain corals, some of them ancient, like giant underwater sculptures. You'll often spot a humphead wrasse cruising by, completely unfazed, or a diligent thorny flathead trying its best camouflage act on the sandy patches. Visibility here is usually solid, often 20 metres plus, making it a great spot for newer divers to get comfortable without feeling overwhelmed. Look closely in the staghorn thickets and you might just catch a glimpse of a tiny bluestripe pipefish, or a golden butterflyfish flitting amongst the coral. We’d suggest an early morning dive if you can swing it; the light filtering through the water just hits differently, and the reef feels a bit more awake before the day-trippers arrive. It’s a gentle, beautiful introduction to the GBR, proving that sometimes, the easiest places to reach are still pretty special.
