Lougheed Reef - Québec

Downies Reef isn't your typical tropical coral show, and that's precisely why we love it. This is cold-water diving at its finest, a rugged, honest look at the Atlantic's surprising bounty. We've spent many an hour finning through the kelp forests here, and the sheer density of life is what always brings us back. The reef itself is a tapestry of rock and hardy corals, draped in Irish moss and carragheen that sway with the surge. Keep your eyes peeled for American lobsters tucked into crevices, their antennae waving like curious feelers. We’ve also had some fantastic encounters with schools of Whiting and Blueback Herring, silver flashes against the green-blue water. The best diving here is often on a calm day, when the sun can penetrate the shallows, illuminating the vibrant colours. It’s not a site for the faint of heart, but for divers who appreciate the subtle beauty of temperate waters and the thrill of spotting a Nine-spined Stickleback darting between fronds, Downies Reef is a true standout.
