Lyal Reef - Québec
Lizard Island. It’s a bit of a trek to get here, but that’s precisely its charm. You’re not fighting crowds for a good mooring, and the reefs around the island have a genuine sense of wildness to them. We love the dramatic drop-offs that characterise many of the sites here, often starting shallow and plunging down to depths that give you plenty to explore without ever feeling bottomless. Our favourite spots often reveal massive table corals, some the size of small cars, where you’ll find parrotfish grazing with that distinctive crunching sound. Keep an eye out for blue-spotted wrasse darting in and out of the stony corals; they’re a common sight but always a pleasure to watch. We’ve had incredible luck spotting larger pelagics too, particularly if you’re diving the outer edges on an incoming tide. The visibility here can be truly exceptional on a good day, often 25 metres plus, letting you take in the scale of the reef. It’s a place that rewards thoughtful diving, where patience might just land you a moment with a curious blotcheye soldierfish peering out from a crevice. This is a site that suits divers looking for a genuine immersion in the Great Barrier Reef, away from the more trodden paths. You’ll experience a reef system that feels vibrant and alive, with plenty of intricate coral structures to explore. It’s perfect for those who appreciate the quiet beauty of a less disturbed environment.
