El Mirador - Cozumel

El Mirador is one of those spots in Cozumel that often gets overlooked, and we think that’s a real shame. It doesn't have the famous drift or the giant swim-throughs of some of the southern sites, but we always find something interesting here, especially if you slow down. We love the way the reef is structured, a series of mini-walls and overhangs, creating these perfect little hideouts for smaller creatures. You’ll want to bring a keen eye for macro. We’ve spent whole dives just poking around the nooks and crannies, spotting everything from the delicate Ivory Cerith snails to Spaghetti Eels peering out from their sandy burrows. The Caribbean Vase sponges are everywhere, creating a textured backdrop that’s really quite pretty. It’s a calmer dive, usually without the ripping currents Cozumel is known for, making it ideal for photographers or divers who just want to relax and observe. We’d suggest going in the morning; the light filtering through the shallower sections really makes the colours pop. It’s not for speed demons, but if you enjoy a deliberate, exploratory dive, El Mirador is our pick for a quiet Cozumel morning.
