Palancar Reef - Cozumel

Palancar. It's the name everyone knows in Cozumel, and for good reason. We’ve probably spent more bottom time here than anywhere else on the island, and it still draws us back. The reef really is expansive, a sprawling city of coral. Pick your depth, pick your adventure. Our favourite sections are those deeper walls, usually around 20-25 metres, where the light takes on that incredible sapphire hue. That’s where you'll find the larger lettuce coral formations, some of them ancient, like giant folded brains. It’s also where those famous swim-throughs are best. Not claustrophobic tunnels, but wide, cathedral-like arches and caves that let in dappled sunlight, creating a truly ethereal feeling. Keep an eye out for the resident morays peering from crevices, and the candy basslets, tiny jewels hiding in the shadows. The currents here are generally mild to moderate, a gentle push that makes for effortless drifting. It's an ideal spot for anyone comfortable with depths down to 25 metres, offering consistent beauty without being overly challenging. You’ll see plenty of angelfish, puffers, and trumpetfish cruising the reef top as well. It’s easy diving, but never boring.
