Ultrafreeze Wreck - Cozumel

The Ultrafreeze Wreck, or sometimes just 'Ultrafreeze', isn't one of Cozumel's heavily promoted sites, but we think it deserves more attention. It's a proper wreck dive, a small freighter that went down in the 70s, now sitting upright and mostly intact on a sandy bottom at around 20 metres. We love exploring the cargo holds; they're open enough that light filters in from above, creating these cool shafts of light that dance with the particulate in the water. You'll fin through schools of snapper and grunts that hang around the superstructure, and look closely for the scorpionfish that blend perfectly with the encrusting corals. Our favourite part is the bow, where a massive anchor chain still spills out, draped in sponges. It's a relatively easy wreck to navigate, making it a great step up for divers comfortable with current but new to overhead environments. Go early if you can; the light inside the holds is just magical before the midday sun gets too high.
