Wreck C-53 - Cozumel

The C-53 Xicotencatl feels like a movie set, resting upright on a sandy bottom, broken but still impressive. We always start our dives here by circling the exterior, admiring the way the light filters through the structure. You’ll spot schools of silver-sided fish, often grunts or snapper, hanging like curtains near the deck. The real thrill for us is penetrating the hold. Swim slowly through, letting your eyes adjust to the dim light, and watch for nurse sharks tucked into crevices. The swim-throughs are generally open and don’t require advanced wreck training, but good buoyancy is key to avoid stirring up silt. We’ve seen broadnose worm eels poking their heads out from pipes and cherub pygmy angelfish flitting around the coral growth on the superstructure. It’s a great wreck for those looking for something beyond just observing from the outside, with enough accessible interior space to feel like a true explorer.
