Chanal Reef
Why dive here
With 58+ marine species recorded in the area - including blue sharks, blue whales, humpback whales, orcas and seals & sea lions - Chanal Reef offers some of Alaska's richest reef diving. Water ranges 5-15°C, warmest July, August, September.
We’ve heard some good things about Chanal Reef, and it’s a solid pick for those looking to explore Alaska’s cooler waters. The soft corals here, particularly the reds, stand out against the usual browns and greens of the kelp forests. You’ll spot pigeon guillemots darting through the water column, along with the occasional big skate cruising the seafloor. Keep an eye out for Pacific glass shrimp tucked away in crevices. This spot works well for divers keen on temperate water macro life and a taste of Alaska’s unique underwater environment.
Safety Notes
Cold water this month (avg 11°C). Drysuit or thick wetsuit (7mm+) recommended.
