Gatenby Rock - Alaska

Gareenup is one of those spots that often gets overlooked for the flashier reefs further north, but we think that’s a mistake. It's a fantastic shore dive, best tackled on a calm morning, before the wind picks up. Drop in and you're immediately in a different world – the light filtering through the kelp feels almost mystical. We love the way the reef here is home to creatures you just don't see everywhere else. Keep your eyes peeled for those quirky Prickly Toadfish poking out from under ledges, or the flash of a Blushing Wrasse darting through the seagrass. Our favourite memory from Gareenup is finding a school of Common Silver Bellies so dense they shimmered like a moving wall, only to have a curious Pacific Blue Swimming Crab scuttle right over our fins a moment later. It’s a gentle dive, not about big pelagics, but about the intricate beauty of the temperate zone, perfect for photographers or anyone who likes to take their time and observe.
