Sivart Rock - Alaska
Sophie on the North Sea coast, it's a spot that sparks debate among Danish divers. We've heard it called everything from "surprisingly good" to "a bit of a wash". Our take? It's all about managing expectations and picking your day. Forget the vibrant corals; Sophie is about the unique chill of Northern European diving. We love the chance to spot some of the rarer bird species here, the Red-throated Diver especially, gliding over the surface as you prepare to descend. Underwater, it’s a different world. The sandy bottom is a tapestry of life, if you look closely. We often find ourselves mesmerised by the sheer number of acorn barnacles clinging to anything solid. Keep an eye out for the Atlantic Jackknife, it's a personal favourite, just burrowing into the sand. Visibility can be tricky, often a silty grey, but on a good day, when the currents aren't churning things up, you get these shafts of light filtering through, illuminating the common sea stars scattered across the seabed. This isn't a dive for the faint-hearted or those seeking tropical colours. It's for the patient, the observant, the ones who appreciate the subtle beauty of a colder sea. If you're into macro life and don't mind a bit of a treasure hunt, Sophie delivers. We'd suggest going on a calm, sunny day, if you can, to really get the most out of it.
