Woods Rock - Alaska

The Ecosystem Centre, often just "the tunnel" to those who know it, is a standout for us in the Medes. We love dropping down into the darkness, especially first thing in the morning when the light plays just right. It's not about the big pelagics here, though you might spot a wary bass lurking in the shadows. Instead, focus on the details – the bizarre shape of a sea scorpion camouflaged against the rock, or an anglerfish, surprisingly large, perfectly still in a crevice. The tunnel itself is a narrow swim-through, about 30 metres long, that opens onto a small cavern. We’d suggest a good dive light to really appreciate the sponges and anemones clinging to the walls. The real reward is emerging from the gloom into the bright, open water on the other side. This site is brilliant for macro photographers or anyone who enjoys a more intimate, exploratory dive away from the usual Medes currents.
