DEMA Trader - Florida Keys

The DEMA Trader wreck is one of those sites we always try to hit when we're in the Upper Keys. What we love about it is the way this old freighter just sits upright and proud on the sand, not too deep, meaning plenty of bottom time to really explore. You can still see the mast structure, and the wheelhouse is a fantastic swim-through, full of the kind of spooky light shafts that make for great photos. Our favourite part is the stern, where the prop is still mostly intact, drawing in Goliath groupers that often just hang out under the rudder, huge and unbothered. Schools of grunts and snapper stream in and out of the cargo holds, and we’ve even spotted nurse sharks tucked away in the darker recesses. It’s a pretty easy dive, not usually much current, making it perfect for divers who want to take their time getting to know a proper shipwreck without any major challenges. We'd suggest getting there early to beat the crowds, as it can get a bit busy on weekends.
