Phil Foster Park Snorkel Reef - Florida Keys

Forget the boat trips sometimes. Phil Foster Park’s Snorkel Reef is one of those places we genuinely love for a quick, easy dip straight from the shore. We’re talking about a man-made reef that feels surprisingly natural, just a few kicks off the beach. It’s shallow, maybe four to six feet deep in most spots, making it perfect for snorkelers, new divers, or anyone just wanting a laid-back afternoon in the water without fighting a current. The cool thing here is the sheer density of small stuff. You’ll see schools of French grunts and silver perch hugging the structures, often right up in your face. Look closely at the rocks and you’ll find those tiny crested gobies darting around, and we’ve often spotted juvenile angelfish in the quieter corners. Our favourite moments here are watching the tarpon cruise through, silent and huge, usually in the late afternoon. It's a great spot to practice your buoyancy or test out new gear without any pressure. Just be mindful of other snorkelers, especially on weekends, and aim for a weekday visit if you can.
