Sadie Thompson Wreck - Great Lakes

The Sadie Thompson Wreck isn't about tropical fish and soft coral, it's about history, cold water, and the unique way freshwater preserves a story. We love this site because it’s a proper wreck dive, not just a pile of scattered timber. Descending, you feel that cool embrace of the Great Lakes, and then the structure starts to resolve through the green murk. The Sadie Thompson herself is a wooden schooner, upright and relatively intact, resting in depths that make this a solid advanced dive. We've poked around her bow and stern, marveling at the preserved lines of her hull. The wheelhouse is a favourite spot, the structure still so clear, it's easy to picture her sailing. Keep an eye out for lake trout and burbot, they often cruise the wreck, using the old timbers for shelter. The lack of saltwater means there’s no coral, but the growth of freshwater sponges and quagga mussels gives the wreck a fascinating texture, a sort of fuzzy historical patina. It's a dive that rewards slow exploration and an appreciation for the past.
