USS Naeco - North Carolina

The USS Naeco, a casualty of a U-boat attack, lies broken but still intriguing off the North Carolina coast. We find her at around 20-25 meters, often with a good current running, which brings in the bigger pelagics – sand tiger sharks are a common sight, cruising through the superstructure. The wreck itself is quite broken up, but you can still make out sections of the hull and machinery, now heavily encrusted with soft corals and sponges. It’s a dive that rewards slow exploration, peering into the nooks and crannies where sheepshead and amberjack congregate. We’d suggest this one for divers comfortable with current and keen on wreck penetration, even if it’s just peeking into compartments.
