Carolina Reef - Pacific Northwest

Carolina Reef, a little slice of the Pacific Northwest, always surprises us. It's a spot that truly showcases the PNW's subtle charm, proving you don't need tropical colours for a captivating dive. We've explored it in all seasons, but our favourite time to drop in is late spring when the plankton blooms are just starting to thin out, offering that sweet spot of visibility before summer crowds. Below the surface, the reef isn't about dramatic walls but rather a sprawling, rocky landscape draped in an impressive collection of anemones and sponges. Look closely, and you'll spot countless Green Sea Urchins tucked into crevices, their spines swaying with the gentle surge. We always take our time here, letting our eyes adjust to the soft light filtering through the kelp. It's prime territory for spotting the more elusive critters – those tiny, almost invisible Slender Blade Shrimps clinging to algae, or a shy Humpy Shrimp burrowing into the sand. Keep an eye on the deeper sections for California Spot Prawns peeking out from their rocky hideaways. This is a dive for the patient, the macro lovers, and anyone who appreciates the quiet beauty of a temperate reef.
