Escape Reef - Pacific Northwest

Escape Reef in the Pacific Northwest, now that’s a spot we always enjoy. It’s not about grand pelagics or endless visibility here. Instead, it’s a dive into the quiet, complex world of temperate reefs, the kind of place where you slow down and really look. We love the intricate rock formations, covered in those colourful anemones and sponges, a real tapestry of life. Our favourite time to drop in is on a slack tide, gives you more time to poke around. Keep your eyes peeled for Dungeness crabs scuttling across the seabed; they’re often bigger than you expect. You’ll definitely spot plenty of red rock crabs too, bold as brass. Look closer into the cracks and under overhangs for California spot prawns, often tucked away, and if you’re lucky, a brown catshark might be resting on the bottom, perfectly camouflaged. We’ve even seen harbour porpoises pass by on the surface, a fleeting grey shape. This reef suits divers who appreciate macro life and the unique beauty of cold-water environments, a perfect dive for photographers with a keen eye.
