McKenzie Bright - Pacific Northwest

McKenzie Bright isn’t a grand, sweeping reef, and that’s precisely why we love it. This is a cold water muck dive at its finest, a place where you really need to slow down and look. We find ourselves finning over silty bottoms and through swaying eelgrass beds, often in surprising currents that make you work for it. The reward? A truly intimate look at the creatures of the Pacific Northwest. Our favourite time to dive McKenzie Bright is on a slack tide, just after a big rain when visibility can sometimes surprisingly improve. We’ve spent entire dives just watching Plainfin Midshipmen hunkered down, or spotting Dungeness Crabs scuttling through the sand. It’s a site that rewards patience. You might feel a shiver, even in a drysuit, but the thrill of spotting a giant octopus camouflaged against the rocks, or watching Red Rock Crabs duke it out, makes it worthwhile. This isn’t a site for ticking off big pelagics, though the occasional Spiny Dogfish or even an Orca sighting from the boat isn't out of the question. It’s for divers who appreciate the subtle beauty of a temperate ecosystem, for those who get a kick out of discovering the smaller, often overlooked, residents.
