Robson Reef - Pacific Northwest

Robson Reef? Yeah, we’ve spent some time there. It’s one of those Pacific Northwest spots that really rewards patience and a good light. What makes it a standout for us isn't necessarily massive pelagics, though a minke whale sighting always gets the heart pumping. It’s the sheer density of the smaller stuff. We love seeing those huge red sea urchins, their spines swaying gently with the surge. Look closer and you'll spot slender crabs picking their way across the rock faces, or a shortscale eualid shrimp tucked into a crevice. The reef itself is a riot of colour when you hit it right. Forget sunny tropical blues, think deep emeralds and amber, especially when the sun breaks through the surface. Our favourite time to dive Robson is late morning, after the initial morning rush, but before the afternoon shadows get too long. Keep an eye out for shiner perch schooling around the kelp fronds, they flash silver in the gloom. It’s a site that really suits divers who appreciate the intricacies of macro life and aren't afraid of cooler water. You'll likely see sea lettuce carpeting some areas, and sunflower stars are pretty common too, stretching their arms out. Just remember, the currents can pick up here, so time your dive carefully with the tides.
