S. F. Tolmie - Pacific Northwest

The S.F. Tolmie wreck in the Pacific Northwest has a particular charm, one we really appreciate on a gloomy day. Descending, the first thing you notice is the way the light filters through the green water, picking out the skeletal remains of the hull. It’s less about big fish and more about the intricate, layered ecology of a temperate wreck. We love poking around the nooks and crannies where the Plainfin Midshipman often hang out, their bioluminescent spots just visible in the gloom. Keep an eye out for the iridescent Star ascidians clinging to the metal, and the occasional Spiny Dogfish patrolling the perimeter. Our favourite is spotting the California Spot Prawns tucked into crevices – they’re surprisingly shy. The currents here can be a bit shifty, so we always suggest diving on a slack tide for the best experience. While not a coral reef explosion, Tolmie offers a quiet, contemplative dive perfect for those who appreciate the subtle beauty of a wreck reclaiming its place in the ecosystem.
