Village Reef - Pacific Northwest

Village Reef, now this is a spot we really enjoy. We’ve spent some chilly but incredibly rewarding hours here. It’s not your tropical, colourful reef, obviously, but for a true Pacific Northwest dive, it’s a standout. Think moody, green light filtering through thick kelp forests, creating this ethereal, otherworldly feel. What makes it special for us? The sheer density of some of the creatures. We’re talking about a canvas of sunflower stars that stretches out, arms waving gently in the surge, and the way Dungeness crabs scuttle across the rocks. Keep an eye out for the slithery snake pricklebacks tucked into crevices – they’re masters of camouflage. We’ve also had some fantastic encounters with giant kelp, watching it sway and undulate, a living curtain for humpy shrimp and even the occasional red salmon. It’s a dive that rewards slow exploration. Don't rush it. We always recommend going at slack tide if you can manage it; the currents here can be a bit frisky, making it harder to appreciate the smaller details. Visibility averages 10-15 metres on a good day, but even when it’s a bit murkier, the close-up encounters with the resident fish and invertebrates are worth it. This dive suits those who appreciate the subtle beauty of temperate waters, divers who get a kick out of spotting the less flashy but equally fascinating critters.
