Tank - Dahab

Forget the name. The ‘Tank’ isn't some colossal military machine, which frankly, is a good thing. Instead, you're diving a couple of smaller, more intimate wrecks – a light armoured personnel carrier and a recovery vehicle. We love the immediate sense of history here, the way these metal hulks have been completely colonised by the reef, becoming artificial homes rather than stark intrusions. Drop down and you're greeted by thick growths of staghorn coral, creating a textured surface where you’d expect rusted plating. Look closely and you’ll find Klunzinger's wrasse flitting between crevices, while the vibrant reds of common lionfish often perch like sentinels. Our favourite trick is to really get low and search for Townsend's fangblenny darting in and out of the various openings. The interiors are too silty and constricted for penetration, but the exterior, with its scattering of small giant clams and the occasional bigeye houndshark cruising past, offers plenty to explore for all experience levels. It’s a compelling contrast, the man-made merging so completely with the natural.
