DIRE DEWA (DIRA DAWA) - Dahlak Archipelago

Dire Dewa sits flat on the sandy bottom, not quite a ghost, more a skeletal memory of its former self. We love how the shallow depth, just 11 metres, lets us spend ages exploring the huge hull of this old carrier vessel. There’s a certain eerie beauty to seeing the mangled metal, especially when a school of jacks swirls past, catching the light as they dart through the gaps. This isn’t a wreck for penetration, it's far too dangerous for that, but the outside is an absolute spectacle. You can trace the outline, imagining the cargo it once carried, now home to clouds of fusiliers and the occasional curious titan triggerfish. The shallow light means visibility is usually excellent, painting the scene in vibrant blues. It’s a photographer’s dream, and we’d suggest going at slack tide, usually around midday, when the water is calmest and the light penetrates right to the sand. For a truly unique Red Sea wreck experience, Dire Dewa is a standout.
