ZAMALEK - Eilat

The Zamalek wreck, sitting upright in a shallow eight metres, is one of those sites we always recommend for new wreck divers. It’s a landing craft, sunk intentionally we hear, and you can swim right through the cargo hold, which is an easy, open space. Sunlight streams in through the hatches, illuminating schools of glassfish that shimmer as you pass. What makes Zamalek special for us is how accessible it is, even for snorkelers, but it still feels like a proper wreck dive. The stern section, especially, is a haven for cardinalfish and we often spot lionfish tucked into crevices along the edges. Our favourite detail has to be the small anemones that have colonised the deck, their tentacles swaying gently with the surge. We’d suggest going early in the morning before the dive school crowds arrive; the light is softer then, and the barracuda often cruise by the bow. Just remember, it’s a popular spot, so keep an eye out for other divers.
